He has held various responsibilities at the Bank of Spain, such as Deputy Governor (2017-2018), Director General of Operations, Markets, and Payment Systems (2006-2016), Director of Operations (2000-2006), and Director of Foreign Operations (1989-2000).

He has also been a member of the Supervisory Board of the Single Supervisory Mechanism (MUS) of the European Central Bank (BCE), where he was also part of different high-level committees and groups; of the committees for the Committee on the Global Financial System (CGFS) and Markets of the Bank for International Settlements (BIS); of the Board of Directors of the Comisión Nacional del Mercado de Valores (CNMV); and of the Board of Directors and the Executive Committee of Bolsas y Mercados Españoles (BME).

More recently, he served as a director of Targobank, S.A. (2023-2024).

In October 2025, he was appointed director of the Board of Directors of ABANCA Corporación Bancaria, S.A.
